FLORENCE — Bikers and bears swarmed on St. Elizabeth in record numbers.

The Florence-based American Legion Post 4 held its third annual Teddy Bear Ride to benefit St. Elizabeth Florence.

For the ride, motorcyclists took a 24-mile ride through Boone County that ended at the hospital to finally deliver teddy bears.

The bears are given to children who are in the hospital to help calm them during a scary experience.

“We make a little ride of it and make it fun,” said organizer Dan Rouse.

Thanks to great weather, the ride had its biggest turnout ever, Rouse said.

“We’ve gotten bigger every year,” he said.

This year, a total of 1,600 teddy bears were donated by 178 riders, Rouse said.

“I’m overwhelmed that we were able to get as many as we got,” he said.

After delivering the teddy bears, the ride continued onto Mugbee’s where the owner donated dinner for all of the riders because he wanted to help with the effort after his son was given a teddy bear during a hospital visit, Rouse said.

“Knowing we’re helping kids makes it all worth it,” he said.

Organizing the ride takes several weeks of work to plan out a route that is safe, avoiding highly trafficked areas as much as possible.

“We try to keep away from as many left turns as possible,” Rouse said.
